Moving Tips

Our customers frequently ask us questions about moving. We decided to consolidate these questions and provide our expert opinions.

Is there a best time of year to move?

You should consider your individual situation when deciding when to move. It's usually unpleasant to move in the colder months. However, you should know that the months between May and September are the busiest months for moving companies. The beginning and end of the month are also the busiest times, so if you plan to move then, you will need to schedule ahead of time and be flexible with your plans.

How do I choose a moving company?

The best way to choose a reputable moving company is to ask people for recommendations. You can ask people you trust like friends, family members, and coworkers for recommendations. Then check the Better Business Bureau to ensure the business has not received many complaints.

How far ahead of time should I contact a moving company?

You should give as much notice as possible, especially if you plan to move during the summer. We recommend contacting a mover at least four to six weeks beforehand.

What does a relocation consultant do?

A relocation consultant looks over your home and your belongings to give you more accurate moving and storage quotes. He or she will calculate the weight of your items and the truck size you will need, and they will be able to tell you any other costs you will encounter.

What should I do to prepare for the move?

Of course you need to pack up all your things. However, you should also get rid of items you do not need or want. You can sell them at a garage sale, donate them to a charity, or give them away to friends and family.

You should also notify the post office of your change of address.

Are there any items the mover cannot transport?

Most movers will not move the following items:

  • Aerosol cans
  • Ammunitions and Explosives
  • Combustible Items
  • Flammable Items
  • Gasoline
  • Hazardous Materials
  • Jewelry
  • Legal Documents
  • Paints
  • Plants

What should I do the day of the move?

Beyond packing and supervising the move, you should be sure to exchange phone numbers with the moving truck driver so you can reach each other in an emergency.
